Out-of-Body
Stuck In Body
I had an out of body experience (OBE) this morning. I haven’t had one in a while.
I first started having OBEs when I was 16. For over 10 years, I would read amazing stories of other peoples’ adventures, only to compare them with my boring experiences.
This morning was a typical boring OBE, which funny enough, was actually interesting because I haven’t had an experience like it in a while.
I got up at 6:45am, went to the restroom, and returned to bed. Usually I wake up at around 7-7:30am, so my mind was pretty alert.
I laid back and meditated.
Meditation is strange because I try to both make an effort, and not make an effort. If I make zero effort, then I just fall asleep like normal.
But if I try too hard, then nothing works. It’s like an engine that siezes up.
So I tried to maintain that gentle effort of letting thoughts bubble naturally in my head, but not grasp at them and let them consume me.
It worked!
I did have some breaks in consciousness, and at one point I remember a false awakening (?) of my wife letting our dog in the bed, and me trying to force him down. She was annoyed at my strictness.
At some point, I realized I could leave my body.
I tried my normal technique of floating to the doorway, without sight, and to get in the hallway. Usually once I’m far enough away, I can get my vision online. However, this time, I couldn’t get out of the bedroom. I couldn’t control my movement very well.
My vision faded in and out in the bedroom, as I spun in different directions, without much control.
It was interesting though, because I watched very closely as my vision came in and out, and noticed small details and distortions.
After some struggle, I accepted my fate of being stuck in my body while out of body. This was the state I was stuck in every time I got out during my 20’s, and eventually led to me giving up practice because I couldn’t overcome it. However, this time I was just happy to have fun with it.
My chest and head were basically stuck, but I could move my non-physical arms and legs. I reached my arms out and touched my face.
I opened my physical right eye, or so I thought. From my limited vision, I could see my nose to the left, but I could also see my eyelashes. I could focus on my nose and eyelashes, and it wasn’t blurry.
Later, when I woke up, I looked through my real right eye, and the angle is slightly different. I can’t see my eyelashes, and my nose is very blurry. I believe I was actually seeing through my non-physical eyes, which were slightly offset from my physical eyes.
I did realize this discrepency at the time, wondering how I could possibly see my eyelashes from the corner of my eye, if I was actually looking out my physical right eye.
Either way, I continued to play with reaching my non-physical arms up, feeling my face, lifting my non-physical feet up, dropping them through the bed, etc.
At one point, I attempted to shoot myself downwards through the Earth, as fast as I could go. I saw a blurry geometric pattern, which turned into a screen of static. I got a little freaked out and returned back to my body.
Outside of that, it was a very boring experience.
I’ve had hundreds of OBEs just like this one. I wonder if other peoples’ experiences have the same ratio of boring to exciting OBEs, and they only report on the interesting ones – or if I am bumping up against some personal barrier.
It’s odd to be stuck in body while out of body, but I’m used to it at this point 🙂.
